In the present paper we describe the operation of the automatic press tool for calibrating cermet bushings and rings, The tool was made and tested at the Base Laboratory of the Belorussian Polyteehnical Institute; it is approved by the Special Commission of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Technical Education of the USSR and was shown in the Education Pavilion at the Exhibition of the Achievements of National Economy.
The automatic press die is fundamentally new in design and is intended for calibrating cermet bushings with a height to external diameter ratio H/D - 1/2. Its design is based on the ca-libration method described by us in the journal Poroshkovaya Metallurgiya, No. 3, 1961 in the article entitled: "New Method of Calibration of GermetParts".
The automatic calibration die (Fig. 1) consists of two main parts: the loading unit and the die proper. Both parts are mounted on a general-purpose hydraulic or any other press of suitable size. Each cycle of the die is performed during a double stroke of the press. The hopper-type loading unit feeds inpidual parts into the die. The feed plate 1 is operated by the connecting member 2 which is secured to rod 4 of the press. During the upward motion the plate 1 takes from the hopper several parts 5, which roll in chute 3 to the feeder (Fig. 2). During a double stroke of the press ram the feeder supplies only one part through the helical chute into the calibration die. The helical chute changes the part from a vertical into a horizontal position. Thereupon the part fails through thecatching tube 6 onto the receiving platform of pusher 7 operated by wedge 8. At the required moment the pusher rotates lever 9 which, in turn, moves plate 10 acting as a support for the self- aligning punch 11.

During the upward motion of the wedge the pusher is returned by springs 12 into the initiat position, moving at the same time one part into the calibration zone. The spherical surface of the moving punch automatically aligns the bushing. During the calibration, plate 10 is pressed against the base of the tool by the moving die. After the pressure has been released the shock absorber 14 slightly lifts die 13 with the self-aligning punch, thus releasing plate 10, which during the reciprocating motion pushes the calibrated part out from the tool. The automatic calibration die is to some extent universal. It can be used for calibrating ring-type parts with an external diameter from 10 to 50 ram. The change to other diameters is effected by replacing the exchangeable calibrating parts of the device. The working parts of the stationary die and the punch can be made from alloy steels or cermets.
The output of the tool depends on the number of strokes per minute of the press ram, When used with the RUE-40 press its output is about 1000 parts per hour.
