provide the best design for protecting KTH [5]。 More study is still needed to decide if this set of parameters is still valid for impact loading conditions not studied in this work。
This paper outlines the multi-block method for rapid generation of high quality hexahedral elements。 Convergence of the model can be checked with different mesh density to determine which mesh size converged properly。 Processes used in designing a safer vehicle, from material property modeling to major crash energy absorption component modeling to whole vehicle with occupant modeling were delineated。 If this hierarchical approach is used carefully, the whole vehicle model can be used to evaluate structural integrity with great accuracy and occupant responses can be predicted precisely to determine if the vehicle meets the expected safety rating。 An exemplary modeling approach was reported to determine mechanical properties of magnesium alloy。 The same method canbe used for other materials to build a complete material library。 Next, component models can be developed and validated to determine the geometry of major energy absorption components。 A detailed whole vehicle model can then be built to determine safety rating for frontal, side, or rear-end impacts。 Finally, an example was given to demonstrate how to select proper parameters in vehicle safety design to improve occupant safety。
Modern vehicles are much safer than their predecessors。 This is in part due to safety regulations prescribed in various regions of the world and the use of crash dummies。 However, continue improvement invehicular safetyrequires differentsetof tools。
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its five-year research plan announced this year indicates that computer models will be one of the key emphases inthe next five years [6]。The nextwave of safety may be related to using whole bodyhuman
models to evaluate vehicular safety instead of using crash dummies that are uni-directional and of only limited number of sizes。 OEMs need tobeready for this new trend of design processes if American market is among one of their considerations。
