Abstract: Tess of the D’Urbervilles is considered to be one of the great works of Thomas Hardy。 It is the novel of character and environment, which describes the short and miserable life of the heroine-Tess。 This essay analyzed Biblical Archetypes in Tess of the D’Urbervilles from five aspects- biblical ideas, prototype characters, prototype scene, biblical image and biblical language。 The aim of the essay is to enrich the understanding of characters, scenes narrative, and also images in the novel, and provide some help for people to study the novel in the future。88075

Tess of the D’Urbervilles is one of the great works of Thomas Hardy。 It can be regarded as one of the greatest tragedies in prose in the history of English literature。 And the author Hardy is one of the most important novelists in the Victorian Era and the first important poet in the 20th century。论文网
And the novel is also a famous one of the novels of characters and environment。 The book counts among the best of his works。 However, when we read the great novel, we should not only focus on the story but pay attention to the way in which the story is told。 And from the reading, we can know that the Bible endows the novel with rich connotation and makes the novel more readable。
Hardy was born in Dorset on June2, 1840, in the center of the Wessex country which later figured in his works。 And in 1862 he left for London to continue his work as architect, an occupation he practiced until his marriage。 In the meantime he had found what had to be the chief love of the rest of his life: poetry。
