    摘要英语作为一门语言学科,其学习过程不能单靠有限的课堂教学,必须保证充足的课外阅读输入量。课外阅读作为英语教学的重要组成部分,不仅对培养学生书面表达能力、口语交流能力及扩宽背景知识等学习方面有重要作用而且在培养学生良好学习习惯,指导人生发展方面意义重大。高中英语教学大纲及初中英语新课程标准等都强调重视课外阅读并提出了具体详细的要求和目标。本文以中学为例,通过相关语言学、教育学、心理学等理论分析及运用,并结合中学生身心发展特点对中学英语课外阅读进行了相关研究,以期为如何更好开展英语课外阅读提供有益探索。23700

    Abstract As a language subject, English without abundant extracurricular reading importing cannot make it just by class teaching. It is an important part of English teaching and not only good for students’ academic studying like cultivating students’ writing ability, developing oral English, widening horizon but also beneficial to children’s growing. Senior middle school English teaching syllabus and The English New Curriculum Standard both emphasis extracurricular reading and propose detailed goals. This paper is hoping to offer some helpful exploration by researching linguistic,pedagogy and psychological relevant theory combined with secondary school students’ psychological and physical features.

    The Importance of Extracurricular Reading in the English Learning of the Elementary and Secondary Students
    I. Introduction
    English has been emphasized a lot in China especially after stepping into 21st century, but nowadays English learning is facing an awkward situation. According by a research results made by Shanghai Foreign Language University, only about 5% college students can communicate with others freely without any obstacles. This is very embarrassing both for the learners and teachers. For the ordinary learners, their studying procedure is boring, tough and endless. Some even begins from kindergarten. Though many learners have put much energy and time on English, they still confront with “3 Can’t”, that is “can’t listen (can’t understand), can’t talk, can’t write”. This worrying situation also occurs in some English major students. The embarrassing situation of current English learning, to some extent, is a result of exam-orientated education. That kind of education is inefficiency because it neglects the traits of English.
    As a language discipline differenced with ordinary courses, English has its own learning characters. Language is the best form of a culture. That determines that much related culture knowledge need to understand in order to learn English well. Language backgrounds, including history, behavior, traditions, celebrates, taboo, proverb and many other things, have important effect on English studying. It is hard to believe that one can learn English well without enough backgrounds. But this knowledge usually cannot get from the class teaching. That is why some experts contend that English cannot be taught seriously.
