Awakening of Esperanza's Chicana Feminist Consciousness in The House on Mango Street

Abstract The novel The House on Mango Street is composed of 44 little stories, recording Esperanza’s experiences and witnesses during the period that she transforms from a girl into a woman。 As one of the famous minority writers in the United States, Sandra Cisneros reflects her identity, experiences and consciousness through Esperanza。 Esperanza experiences and witnesses the increasingly fierce social contradictions, with her growing up。 She gradually understands what obstacles are in the contradictions, shapes a clear Chicana feminist consciousness, and also takes practical action。89042

The main purpose of this dissertation is to make clear of the process of Esperanza’s formation of Chicana feminist consciousness, which will play an important role in helping women form feminist consciousness in the future。 This paper analyzes the forming process of Esperanza’s Chicana feminist consciousness and the important functions of several types of characters。 Through careful analysis, we can find that all the gender, race, class and cultural discriminations, women’s miserable experiences and some women’s struggle Esperanza has experienced and witnessed constantly promote her Chicana feminist consciousness。 Therefore, in order to thoroughly change women’s weak position, both the thought that all men are created equal and the feminist consciousness should be instilled in childhood。
