1.2 The Significance of the Research
In China, subtitle translation doesn’t achieve enough attention it deserves. Translators always tend to pay more attention on literary translation instead of subtitle translation. Thus a relatively comprehensive theoretical framework on subtitle translation has not been built. In this case, it is very necessary for Chinese scholars to broaden and deepen the research of subtitle translation in films and TV series.
The significance of this thesis lies in several aspects. Firstly, it can draw much more scholars’ attention to subtitle translation in films and TV series. Secondly, it can make contributions to subtitle translation for it offers subtitle translators some concrete principles and methods which can be followed in the process of subtitle translation practice. Thirdly, it can help in improving the quality of subtitle translation and thus can help audiences better understand the language, the plot and the culture in films and TV series. Fourthly, researches on subtitle translation from English to Chinese help people gather experience in subtitle translation. It helps the subtitle translation from Chinese to English and the exporting of domestic films and TV series.
1.3 The Structure of the Research
This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is introduction, stating the research background, significance of the research and the structure of the research. Chapter two is literature review about subtitle translation. In this chapter, the focus of statements falls on the characteristics and function of subtitle, on the researches on subtitle translation abroad and on the researches on subtitle translation in China. Chapter three is the theoretical framework mainly concerned with the skopos theory from several aspects of the skopos theory, such as the development of the skopos theory and the rules of the skopos theory. Chapter four is a detailed analysis of subtitle translation in How I Met Your Mother from the perspective of the skopos theory. In this chapter, the author will discuss principles translators should follow and methods translators can take in subtitle translation under the guidance of the skopos theory. Chapter five is conclusion about major findings, limitations and suggestions of the research paper.
