Title Perfect Bandits, Perfect Life? A Glimpse into the Perfect Life in Bandits
Abstract
BANDITS tells a story about two friends and convicts, one charismatic (Joe), the other neurotic and hypochondriac (Terry), starting a bank robbing spree, hoping to fund a dream they share. During their robbing of some banks in a small town, both of them fall in love with Kate，a young housewife who doesn’t want to live an ordinary life. Then by scheming a perfect plan, they complete their last and best bank-robbing, escape successfully and live out their dream in Mexico. A criminal movie as it is, the director seems to have paid more attention to the description of humanity and dreams and pursuits of the bandits. By presenting a romantic happy ending, the film dramatically realizes the pursuit of a perfect life.

1. Introduction
Bandits, directed by Barry Levinson, is shown in 2001. It is a very normal film which has the typical Hollywood marking, superstars—Bruce Willis, beautiful woman—Cate Blanchett, most exciting story—Bank robbery, happy ending—the heroes run away successfully and have a happy life with their loved ones.
At the first scene, Joe (Bruce) and Terry (Billy) are cornered by the state police in a big bank in the town, which is very different from what they do—they usually go to the bank manager’s home and spend the night with their family—that’s why they are called the Sleepover Bandits, and then take all the money in the bank in the next morning. Through this way, they can get the money freely and easily without killing the innocent people or facing the police. This is their perfect plan and hits three “bird” with just one stone.
On the radio Joe and Terry kidnap the host of a famous TV show—Criminals At Large, they tell people all of their plans and how they practice them. There are three of them, one to be the smarter, one to be the hero, the third to be the front man—Harvey in the movie. The front man does all the things they need to do on bank robbery—the room, the food and the runaway car. The smarter plots all the banks they would rob from Oregon to California as well as other things which need brain work. The hero’s responsibility is to take control of the hostages to stay silent. Then they go to the bank manager’s house after making up and rob the bank next morning.
Everything goes well until one day Terry gets on a woman’s car after his car broke down. Kate, who is a desperate housewife, leaves home after her husband forgets their marriage anniversary. She falls in love with Joe—a good-looking gentleman at first sight. The result is Kate’s staying with these three bank robbers and she begins to love this dangerous but exciting lifestyle. They are more like a team and work together as compliment to each other. During this period, however, the front man, Harvey, gets away with his mind and nearly lets them be caught by the police. They have to run away separately. Two weeks later, when they meet again, Kate tells Joe she loves Terry and at the same time public knows there is a woman in this bank robbery team. Kate’s husband shows on TV and believes that she is the hostage of these bandits. Everything goes wrong, Kate doesn’t want to back home and she can’t make choice between these two men. On her mind, together they are the perfect man—one is sweet and one is strong.
