Title The Futile Struggle The Study of Human Nature in The Film The Mist
Abstract
The film The Mist is adapted from the novel of Stephen King who is the most popular master of horror thriller, and directed by Frank Darabont whose masterpiece is The Shawshank Redemption. By analyzing the major characters in The Mist, this paper reveals the vanity and cowardice in human nature and concludes that humanity is complex, and human nature is likely to be distorted and perverted when crises strike.

1. Introduction
In 1994 director Frank Darabont became a blinking rising star and was nominated “Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay” for his first work The Shawshank Redemption. However, this work that made Frank Darabont famous was just adapted from Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which was a passage in Different Seasons whose author was Stephen King. Stephen King was known as “Modern Horror Fiction Master” and awarded “American National Book Award” in 2003. The film The Mist is another famous classic horror movie which is adapted from a novel of Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont .
Based on the American film The Mist, this article will research all sorts of performance of people who are surrounded by the unknown fear, through the analysis of the action and results of their struggle and inaction, success and failure, courage and cowardice and etc to explore the theme of the film, namely self-mockery and to torture defects in human nature. Conclusions drawn from this article should help readers to understand the tenacity of life and to oppose the wrong view which lays one-sided emphasis the success and failure. Finally to deepen the understanding of the multidimensional humanity and find that human nature shares both arrogant and cowardly side.
This article will be discussed in three parts. The first one will explore the multi-level meanings of The Mist from the realistic perspective and analyze the style of The Mist. The second part will reveal the characters of the protagonists, such as the cowardly warrior David, the leader of the heresy, Mrs. Carmody and the nameless mother by means of comparing the movie The Mist with the novel which the movie is adapted from. What’s more, this part will as well uncover the arrogant and cowardly humanity of the insignificant people in the unknown atmosphere. The last part will conclude the humanity is complex and contradictory, and the true glory of humanity is the tenacity of life.
As is defined by Mark Browning (2009), audiences should evaluate the film from the perspective of the film itself. The screenplay which is adapted from the novel is different from the novel itself because the screenplay can’t be confined by stiff word game. The way that terror adaptability is mixed with literary arts is useful to analyze the hidden reason of terror. Take the movie The Mist as an example, diffuse fog and closed space which are described in the novel is originally usual scene in horror fiction, but Mr. Darabont masterly makes the above scenes into shocking visual stimuli and provokes the audience’s fears for unknown darkness. However, Edward J. Ingebretsen (1996) thinks that horror arts investigation should be interdisciplinary rather than to be limited in a certain area. The research can range from literature, film, history, philosophy to theology and so on. From his perspective, Stephen King’s film world is a fantasy world with bold imagination. Stephen King focuses on systematic social culture rather than superficial violence, so the cross-culture research is an appropriate link.
