摘 要《浮士德的悲剧》是克里斯托弗•马洛由浮士德的故事改编而成的一出戏,戏中浮士德为了获取力量和知识将灵魂卖给了魔鬼。本文用深入阅读和文本分析的方法,通过分析浮士德在知识、爱情和理想三方面的悲剧来解释英国文化在文艺复兴的背景下的新改变。可以看到,浮士德是英国文化的缩影和典型的推动文化发展的知识分子代表。希望本文能加深对当时知识分子的追求和英国文化发展的理解。36171

Abstract The Tragedy of Faustus is a play by Christopher Marlowe, based on the Faust story, in which Faustus sells his soul to the devil for power and knowledge. With the methods of close-reading and text analysis, this paper explains the new change of British culture under the background of the Renaissance through the analysis of Faustus’s tragedies of knowledge, love and ideal. Accordingly, we can see that Faustus is an epitome of British culture and a representative of intellectuals who propel cultural development. Hopefully this paper will deepen the understanding of the pursuit of intellectuals and the cultural development of the period.

I. Introduction
Dr. Faustus, the main character of Marlowe’s play, is reshaped from the old German legend. Faustus is an excellent scholar who strongly desires to acquire all kinds of knowledge. He is tired of his present study on the academic curriculum and becomes interested in black magic. By conjuration he calls up Mephistopheles who is the Devil’s servant. Faustus makes a bet with Mephistopheles. He sold his soul to the Devil in return for twenty-four years of life in which he may get the services of Mephistopheles who will offer him everything he wants. Thanks to the Devil, Faustus introduces his magical art into full play, at the same time, Faustus has experienced much internal conflict, such as in the appearances of both Good Angel and Bad Angel in the final scene. There exists merely the scary soliloquy in which the anguish of the hero’s mind is poignantly symbolized. Tragedy of Faustus is based on an older tale; it is believed to be the first drama of the Faust legend.
Some scholars believe that Marlowe developed the story from a popular translation, commonly called The English Faust Book in 1592. It is thought that there existed an earlier, lost, German edition of 1587, which may have been influenced by even earlier, equally missing pamphlets in Latin. No matter what the inspiration is, the development of Marlowe’s play is very faithful to the original, especially in the way it mixes comedy with tragedy.
