Abstract Alice Munro is one of the most important figures in Canadian literature, known as “Canadian Chekhov”. Runaway, one of her representative works, won the Giller Prize after its publication. This thesis focuses on the first story Runaway, describing Carla’s growth route from escaping to returning. 42278
This thesis is based on the analysis of text. Through the analysis of the reasons why Carla chooses to escape from family, husband and companion, it reveals that women suffer from the constraints of family, oppression of husband and have complex emotions towards companion. Through the exploration of Carla’s hesitation and mediation on her way of escaping, it aims to show the growth dilemma of female and highlight that with material and mental dependence on men, women will give up freedom and happiness and choose to return. Through the discussion about the life after Carla’s returning, it reflects the implied meaning of returning and emphasizes this kind of returning doesn’t mean women go back to their original place. To some degree, it means the maturity and growth of female.
At last, it draws a conclusion that if women cannot get rid of the material and mental dependence from men, each escaping of women is just closer to their goals and they cannot have true freedom and happiness.

摘要爱丽丝·门罗是加拿大文学的重要代表人物，被誉为“加拿大的契诃夫”。《逃离》，作为门罗的代表作之一，出版后就获得了加拿大吉勒文学奖。本篇论文主要探讨其中的第一个故事《逃离》，讲述女主人公卡拉从逃离家庭、逃离丈夫到最终回归的成长历程。
本篇论文以文本分析为基础，通过分析卡拉逃离家庭、逃离丈夫、逃离同伴的原因，揭示家庭对女性的束缚，丈夫对女性的压迫以及女性在成长中对同伴的复杂情感。通过剖析卡拉的内心思考，了解女性成长所面临的困境，揭示女性由于对男性物质和精神的双重依赖，最终将会放弃自由和幸福，选择回归。通过探讨卡拉回归后的生活现状，反思女性回归背后的意义，表明女性的回归并不意着女性退回原来的起点，而是在一定意义上表征着女性个体的成熟和自主性力量。
最后，得出结论，难以摆脱对男性物质和精神的双重依赖，女性的每一次逃离只是对目标的一次次接近，难以走向真正的独立和成长。
