Abstract From the perspective of the Skopos theory, this thesis aims to summarize the procedures and strategies that are helpful to translate Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales into Chinese. This paper is a comparative study of Su Fuzhong’s and Ba Jin’s respective Chinese translations of The Happy Prince, one of the most classic fairy tales of Oscar Wilde. Based on the Skopos theory and its three rules, namely the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, the study finds that what worth attention during the translation process are set phrases, long and complicated sentences, polysemous words, exclamations and repeated words, and to address these problems we should use the method of domestication, invoke the theme of the source text, pay attention to sentence patterns, understand polysemous words and exclamations correctly, and recognize repeated words that carry symbolistic meanings. Inspired by the Skopos theory, translators must first identify the Skopos in a particular context, and then choose the translation strategies and procedures accordingly. What’s more, they should also keep in mind the three rules of the Skopos theory and the interrelationships among them.42982
