Narrative ageing: an investigation of the conditions of aged life in the north of Zhejiang Province Abstract In 2014, The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (known as CASS) announced the Blue Book of China’s Society :<Society of China analysis and Forecast (2014)>. In this book, it indicates that in the year of 2013, there have been no less than 200 million old people aged above 60 in our country. 46825
The Officer of The China National Committee on Ageing (known as CNCA) has also pointed out that in the future 20 years, the ageing population of our country will increase at a scale of 10 million every year; What’s more, by the middle of this century, we may achieve a peak of the population ageing, the population of the old people, is estimated to be 487 million, taking an increasing proportion of 35% of the whole population in China. Confronting such an enormous group, it is indispensable for us to pay more attention to their psychological state and life quality.
My project will take the old people, who lived in the Small & Medium-Scaled Cities or Towns in the North of Zhejiang Province, as my interviewees, in the form of recording interview, managing to make the old people tell stories about their past living condition and those most impressive things happened to them in the past with their dialects; step by step, using means of conversations let the mixed feelings beneath their heart drip out of their tongue. Meanwhile, we can observe their expressions, actions at the process of their retelling. Furthermore, I will record these conversations and transform them in the form of literary materials so that to do further research on the feeling when they are telling stories and what they have talked about. As a reflection or, more likely, a mirror, for us to see whether their life quality and attitudes are influenced, or what did their sense of happiness come from. Having done much research works on the literary materials abroad on the aspects of the old men’s recession pattern, life quality and self-recognizance. We may draw an initial conclusion, and put forward a possible way of cultivating the old men’s positive psychological state and of promoting their senses of happiness. To some extent, I am looking for a way of improving the life quality of the old men who lived in the Small & Medium-Scaled Cities or Towns in the North of Zhejiang Province, focused mentally. More generally, I may apply my theory about cultivating positive attitudes towards population ageing to other parts around Zhejiang and even our country.
