1. Introduction
Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory was introduced to China in the early 1980’, and was widely adopted in translation. Which has great effect on translation of that time, many achievements have been made. Though it gradually lost its influence in the late 1980s and 1990s, it does not necessarily mean the theory almost has no study value today. Now how to combine Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory with traditional Chinese translation theories become the issue to be discussed and studied in translation circles.
In China, not much emphasis was put on prose translation, much of it was on novel translation. Prose in China has a long history, which can be dated back from Shang Dynasty (16th-11th century BC). Modern prose refers to essays written after May-fourth Movement, which also show the essence of Chinese culture. Lu Xun, a famous writer and critic once said the great success achieved in prose and sketch almost exceeds that in novel, drama and poetry from May Fourth Movement. Zhang Peiji’s Selected Modern Chinese Essays is well acknowledged both at home and abroad, and in many translation courses and examinations, the books are referred as reference books.
