    One of the greatest joys during the writing of this thesis is learning a great deal of not only translation theories and methods but also Chinese cultural terms. I would like to give my sincere thanks to the following people for their helpful dedication and contribution, without which the path to finishing this paper would have been a whole lot more bumpy.

    My profound gratitude goes to Ms. Ge Xiaoyan, my supervisor, who has generously shared her inspirational and provocative ideas during each of our discussion sessions. I will never forget that every time, she has spared much of her precious time with me, patiently, recommending and giving me a lot of reference materials and books, reading and revising my paper—paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence. And I really learned a lot from her, including the rigorous logical thinking, writing methods and how to illustrate ideas in vivid details.
    Abstract
    Language is the indispensible and irreplaceable carrier and tool of culture transmission, conversely, culture also restricts the development and communication of language. Under the irresistible trend of globalization, the whole world has been bonded together on an unprecedented scale. With the continuous prosperity of cultural communication among countries, cultural clashes still cannot be avoided and ignored. Chinese cultural terms are important carriers of Chinese cultural messages. In order to deal with the globalization more properly and to display and promote Chinese culture, translators should weigh his words extremely prudently. When translating Chinese cultural terms, translators should have a good command of Chinese culture connotation, adopt scientific application of translation strategies and methods and do their utmost to promote intercultural communication and world harmony. Domestication and Foreignization are two translation strategies, none of which seems superior to the other. This thesis probes into the dialectical unity of Domestication and Foreignization by analyzing translation instances under the instruction of Skopos Theory.

    摘要
    语言是文化不可或缺和替代的载体和传播工具,文化反过来制约着语言的发展和交流。在当下不可阻挡的全球化浪潮中,世界正以史无前例的规模越来越紧密地联系在一起。随着各国之间的文化交流前所未有的密切和繁荣,文化冲突依然不可避免和忽视。中国文化特色词语是传播中国灿烂文化的重要载体。为了更好地应对全球化浪潮和向世界更好地展示和发扬中国文化,翻译工作者需要格外慎重,在翻译中国文化特色词语时,译者应最大限度地把握中国文化的内涵,科学运用翻译策略和方法,尽最大努力促进文化间交流,为世界范围内的和谐尽一份绵薄之力。“异化”或“归化”作为翻译策略并无绝对的高低优劣之分,两者各有优缺之处。本文通过分析中国文化特色词语的翻译实例,以翻译目的论为指导结合翻译实践,探讨翻译过程中异化和归化两种翻译方法的辩证统一。
