Abstract Chinese and American family lives are quite different from each other because of the effects of collectivism and inpidualism。 Chinese family lives pay much attention to collective benefits and the Chineses tend to sacrifice a lot of personal desires for the collectivity no matter in family structures, family membership, family activities, the education of children or their outlook on marriage。 Americans concentrate on personality。 They put more emphasis on the quality of independence, personal feelings and inpidual bebefits in every aspect of family lives。 This paper is written from the perspective of cultural differences to compare Chinese family lives with American ones in order to absorb the virtues of different family lives and make contributions to the world communication。73540

This is the place where a person experiences love, hatred, happiness, depression and deep agony first。 Hope is nurtured here。 Dreams are realized here。 This is also the place where a person knows who should be trusted and who should be kept away。 In a word, home is the starting point of one’s life (Samovar and Porter 95)。 To some degree, family life can determine what kind of person you are。 In this world, there are numerous families。 One is different from the other because of different cultures。 Chinese families are quite different from American families。 The former is typical of collectivism while the latter is the epitome of inpidualism。 Studying how the collectivism and inpidualism exert their influences on Chinese and American family lives can help us have a deep understanding of different families and absorb the virtues from different families。 It’s necessary for us to undertake this study because only by researching it carefully can we improve our family lives and communicate and associate with people all over the world well。 This thesis will explain what the collectivism and inpidualism are first。 Then, it will introduce what the Chinese and American families are like under collectivism and inpidualism from the perspectives of family structures, family membership, family activities, the ways of nurturing and educating children and their outlook on marriage。论文网
