1 Introduction
Amy Tan, a famous Chinese-American writer, was born in Oakland, California in 1952, and grew up in Santa Clara. She graduated from high school in Switzerland, and received her master's degree in Linguistics from San Jose State University. She was surrounded by influences from both Chinese and American cultures all her life. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants. In 1949, they left China for the United States, and both of them had unusual background which later provided Tan a lot of writing materials.
Amy Tan started to get an intense interest in writing novels since 1985. She participated in a writer-training camp and soon some short stories of hers were published. The Joy Luck Club was written in 1987 after she took her mother to China to see the daughters who have been forced to leave their mother forty years ago. This trip was a revelation for Tan, and it also gave her a new perspective of the relationship between her and her mother.
Amy Tan, categorized as one of the most prominent Asian American writers, till now has written several books, including The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, Saving Fish from Drowning, etc. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. Among of them, The Joy Luck Club is the most successful one, it is a masterpiece in Chinese-American literature.
Published in 1989, The Joy Luck Club is widely acclaimed by readers and critics. And the author Amy Tan had made a significant impact on the Asian American literary scene as well. The book tells a story of four Chinese American immigrant families in San Francisco, California which start a club known as “the Joy Luck Club”, playing the Chinese game of Mahjong for money while enjoying all kinds of delicious foods cooked by themselves. Amy Tan and the daughters in the novel actually have something in common. They are the second-generation immigrants. But their mothers, as the first-generation immigrants, it is not easy for them to totally integrate in American culture. They always communicate with poor English. They are traditional Chinese women and never forget their miserable lives in Old China. The Joy Luck Club, as the name suggests, is an inspiring club that gives its members joy, hope and power. Amy Tan made her novel a huge success by choosing the conflicts and blending between immigrant mothers and American-born daughters as the subject.
The Joy Luck Club is composed of four sections.Through the exploration of the novel, it mainly discusses the cultural conflicts, understanding and blending between the Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters, and metaphorically between Chinese culture and American culture.
In Sugar sisterhood:Situating the Amy Tan Phenomenon Sau-ling Wong analyzes the popularity of Amy Tan’s works as a cultural phenomenon. “The fortunes of once-popular, now overlooked cultural interpreters in Chinese American literary history, such as Lin Yutang, and Jade Snow Wong, suggest that cultural mediation of the Orient for the ‘mainstream’ readership requires continual repackaging to remain in sync with changing times and resultant shifts in ideological needs” (Wong, 1998:65). Such conflicts happen due to the ethnic culture. The Joy Luck Club stimulates ethnic appreciation between two generations and cultures.
