A Study of the Media’s Responsibility in Mass Disturbances
Abstract:As a subsystem of the social macro system, news media has its functions evolved in accordance with social development and demands. The thesis further investigates the media’s functions based on an analysis of their behaviors in mass disturbances. It is expected to give better play to their functions at the present times and in future, which is the meaning and purpose of this thesis. Caused by some contradictions, mass disturbance news events may have a significant impact on social order and social stability. But news media nowadays do not make satisfactory reports with regard to these events. There are still many problems, such as insufficient information, low transparency, evident ideological tendency, a lack of in-depth investigations and so forth. In allusion to these issues, the thesis puts forward some suggestions: the pressman should perform their duties as information gate-keepers, dedicate to maintaining social stability and keep information unimpeded; serve as a bridge of communication between the contradictory parties; set store by public opinions and public supervision; conduct themselves pursuant to professional standards; show enough respect for the public’s right to know; carry out specific news strategies; make targeted plans to fulfill the media’s social responsibility and publicity efficiency.
