In China, the rules and procedures for metaphorical-word translation discussed tend to be more pragmatic。 In the book of A Course Book in English-Chinese Translation, Zhang Peiji and his co-compilers (1980:160-163) summarize three strategies, namely, “literal translation, replacing the source language image with a standard target language image and converting the metaphorical word to sense”。
Guo Zhuzhang (1996) modifies the methods proposed by Zhang Peiji and puts forward five methods for metaphorical word translation in his book A Practical Course Book in Translation between English and Chinese。 The translation methods are: a) literal translation plus explanation; b) literal translation plus meaning; c) adapting the metaphorical word; d) using Chinese couplets to render the English metaphorical word; e) and replacing the SL image with a TL image。
Xu Jun and Liu Fagong (2004:50-53) claim when translating metaphorical words, “The same figure may convey different images in different cultures。 ” Wang Bin (2008:55-57) issues an essay entitled Blending Theoretic Account of Translation under Metaphoric Structure and claims that translation of metaphorical words is a kind of dialogue or communication between SL and TL。

According to Lakoff and Johnson’s statistics, more than 70% of the English expressions are derived from metaphorical words (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980: 51), so it is reasonably concluded that they have permeated every aspects of our life and it is imperative to introduce their definition。
A metaphorical word is a one-word metaphor or a metonym, such as “chameleon”, referring to a capricious and changeable person。 In most cases, a metaphorical word turns into a dead metaphor, which has the most frequency of use and is largely lexicalized。 People use it so commonly that sometimes they will know the metaphorical meaning without a second thought。 Those metaphorical words may be considered as terminologies in the semantic field and therefore contributes to greater accuracy and liveliness in the use of language。
