A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Discourse —Based on Catastrophic Journalism from Chinese and Western Media
Abstract News discourse is an important means of acquiring information and entertainment, and people all hold that news discourse is neutral, accurate and real。 However, critical discourse analysis researchers question this kind of thoughts and find that language has never been an objective and transparent medium through extensive research, because the use of language tend to be determined by the ideology of speakers and this phenomenon is ubiquitous in language。 Critical linguistics, also called critical discourse analysis (CDA), mainly reveals the ideology news discourse deliver and explains the relations between ideology and power that are hidden behind news discourse。 Based on Halliday’s systemic functional grammar, this paper tries to reveal the hidden ideology of several catastrophic reports by China Daily and The Times from the perspective of transitivity, modality and ideology。 Based on the contrastive analysis of one disaster sample, it is indicated that Chinese and American media have different tendencies when reporting these catastrophic reports and news discourse are not so objective and fair like the public has imagined。 This paper also hopes that the readers could receive a deep understanding of news discourse and further improve the consciousness of critical analysis。87096
