2。 Literature Review
Most researchers at home and abroad have studied the name translation of the literary works, especially A Dream of Red Mansions。 A Dream of Red Mansions is one of the four famous Chinese classics, which is known as the encyclopedia of Chinese feudal society (Zhou, 1987)。 Because translating the names of A Dream of Red Mansions has big significance for the culture communication of the Chinese and the foreign languages。 Among the many English versions of A Dream of Red Mansions, Yang translation and Hawkes translation are the good work up to now。
The research of Li and Xiao, referred to an example about name translation written by Hawkes。 鸳鸯(Faithful duck) who is the maidservant of the Grandmother, has cared about the master until death。 So her name was translated into Faithful。 Another example is平儿(Patience), working for Xi Feng when the poor, hard-working。 The translation combined with the formerly English translation alliteration, and it is the best of both worlds (Li & Xiao, 2001)。
In accordance with the opinion of Xu (2007), Hawkes used different means to translate different groups of characters。 The strategy of translating the names of main characters is transliteration, while the strategy of translating the group of maids and servants is free translation。 Her research focuses on the translation characters of Hawkes’ version。
