1  Introduction

The Awakening and To Room Nineteen were written by American feminist writer, Kate Chopin in the 1890s and British feminist writer, Doris Lessing in the 1960s, respectively。 In two works, heroines had similar experiences, from being aware of freedom, seeking for independence to the disillusionment of pursuit and then accepted the same tragic ending peacefully although the stories have different plots, characters and social environments。 This paper reveals the realistic implications behind the tragedy by making a comparative analysis of the road to awakening, the reasons for awakening and the results of awakening。论文网

1。1 Kate Chopin and The Awakening

Since ancient times, with the emergence of new things, there come questions。 But with the times and people's concept changing, these works can be brought to light again。 American writer Kate Chopin (185l - 1904) is typical of this。 Her last work, The Awakening, was completed on the eve of the nineteenth century when the first climax of the feminist movement in the United States emerged。 Once published ,the book was faced with questions and denouncement and could not be accepted by people of that time。 The main reason was that the protagonist of the book, Edna, was created differently, a New Woman and the novel described women's desire to sex in a straightforward way, which violated the traditional norms for women’s behaviors。 She, therefore, was considered depraved and immoral。 Fortunately, with the rise of the feminist movement and the awakening of female consciousness, many women writers began to question and reshape the images of women who earned thousands of years of notoriety in the male-dominated society and the 19th-century masterpiece on feminism gets more and more recognition and appreciation not only from literary scholars but also other fields after being relegated to limbo for nearly half century。 It is regarded as “Madame Bovary of America”, but as to the reflection of women's independent personality, self realization as well as the awakening of sexual consciousness, The Awakening is far better than the latter(Kan, 2005)。文献综述
