Jane Austen is often acknowledged as one of the greatest realistic novelists in the English literature at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries。
Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in an ordinary middle-class family in Hampshire。 She was educated at home and began writing some stories to amuse her families。 Her father supplied his books to explore her creative ability。 It is undoubtedly an important step for Jane Austen to become an outstanding women writer。 Owing to her living ground in the countryside, she mainly depicts in detail the everyday life of her contemporary English middle-class, including minor landed gentry, country clergymen。 Although she has a very narrow range of topic and world events do not appear in her novels, she describes the most trivial accidents by skillfully using dialogue and tight plot to reveal the eighteenth-century’s social situation and human value。 Her subject matter is invariably centered on young girls who are either about to marry or ready for it。 Her plots, though basically comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favorable social standing and economic security。 During her lifetime, Jane Austen completed a total of six novels, which are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), Northanger Abbey (1818), and Persuasion (1818)。
Sense and Sensibility is Jane Austen’s first full-length published novel。 It is also one of the representative novels to show social situation in the eighteenth century and people’s marriage views at that time。 Although she wrote the first draft of Sense and Sensibility at the age of only 19, the book shows remarkably mature writing technique。 Oliver MacDonagh says that Sense and Sensibility "may well be the first English realistic novel" based on its detailed and accurate portrayal of what he calls "getting and spending" in an English gentry family(Oliver MacDonagh,1991)。 In the early eighteenth century, women in Britain were excluded from the social productive labor and did not have rights to receive education as men, thus lost the economic source。 Because of this, women were inferior to men in the areas of society and politics, they had to rely on men for living。 Therefore, they desired to find men with good fortune and social status as their husband。 During that period, just as Brian Wilkes states, marriage of Austen’s time actually was a kind of foundation stone and its function was mainly key to the connection of fortune, the decision of relation and the right of inheritance(Brian Wilkes,1978)。文献综述
