1。2 Purpose and Significance of the Study 论文网

It is known to all that readers of Children’s literary output belong to different age classes。 And different readers have different understandings to literature works。 Some may only realize the literary meaning, while others may notice the deeper meanings。 Readers always wonder what the author of literature works wants to present。 Therefore, the studies of children’s literature work attract many scholars。 They attempt to analyze the relationships between children and adults, figure out the differences between different cultures and combine literary works with present situation。 Relationships between children’s literature and linguistics are an edge situation, so few attentions are paid in this perspective。 Therefore, this thesis is significant and necessary。 And here is the significance of this thesis:

Firstly, it helps people have better understandings of the characters in the novel--The Adventures of Tom Sawyer。 This research does analyze the dialogues in the novel--The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, with CP and PP。 There are always some behaviors that violate CP and PP。 That is, adults can always make such mistakes, not to say children。 In the children’s world, the principle or standard is not so clear and in order to meet their own demands, they always violate principles and maxims。 This dissertation can help to do deeper analysis on psychological activity and learn the novel characters better。 

Secondly, it helps readers to read the novel from a different perspective--pragmatics。 Not all readers know and understand pragmatic principles。 And in this thesis, the author will introduce two pragmatic principle to readers and combine two principles with the novel, making people have a clearer impression on the novel, not only staying on the surface。 The analysis enables readers to understand this novel incisively and deeply。 

Thirdly, this study provides the practical significance for both children and adults。 For carrying on the talk, people should observe some principles, two of which are CP and PP。 For CP, four maxims should be observed and people may be willing to hear you because you speak with required information, right answers, relevant answers and few obscure expressions。 Considering PP, owning politeness or not can bring about totally different consequences。 The polite words and sentences can be accepted easier than impolite ones。 What’s more, polite behavior can strengthen the relationship between oneself and others。 

1。3 Research Methodology

The dialogues in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are analyzed qualitatively from the perspective of pragmatics。 The author adopts the conversations between features in the novel to exam their personality under four maxims of CP and six maxims of PP。 

What’s more, this thesis mainly focuses on how the speakers in the novel violate the maxims of CP and PP and the reasons of violation of pragmatic principle are figured out。 For making the author’s analysis hit the mark, the author choose principle-centered means。 Thus, the author can grasp better mental changes of the characters and show a much clearer structure for readers。 Besides, according to the analysis, the author offers some suggestions to people in order to help people choose appropriate words and strengthen the connection between oneself and others。

1。4 Organization of the Thesis

This thesis is pided into five chapters。 It is organized as follows:文献综述

Chapter one gives a brief introduction of the thesis。 At first, the research background is given。 And some information of Children’s literature and the connection between literature works and pragmatics are presented。 Then the author lists purpose and significance of the study form three different perspectives。 Besides, research methodology and organization are given in this chapter。
