Intercultural communication involves communication between persons who come from different countries。 In communication, people often love to talk their way to explain others’ words to their cultural customs with others。 Hence people who come from unique cultural background usually feel puzzled or indisposed in communication。 They have a couple of misinterpretations, barriers and collision, which brings about collapse of cross-cultural communication。
Etiquette, as a means of communication, is the moral norms and behavior rules of communication between people。 It is the “emollient” of inpidual relationships that can efficiently lessen the clash between people。 Therefore, as a bridge of communication, etiquette plays a vital role in the communication。
Banquet is an important way of international communication。 Due to the existence of intercultural, if we want to ensure the smooth development of foreign exchanges and reception services, without abruptness and rudeness, we are supposed to have an intimate knowledge of mealtime habits and characteristics of countries。 Therefore, knowing something about table manners of different states is beneficial to boost success rate of cross-cultural communication。
2。 Literal Review
Thanks to reform and opening-up, our country has more opportunities to communicate with other countries。 Knowing other countries’ table manners is indispensable。 As we known, banquet is an effective way for us to build a good relationship and enhance mutual understanding。文献综述
Due to discerning sight and irrepressible wisdom, Margaret Vassar takes an interesting look at the table manners from his book --- The Rituals of Dinner。(Margaret 54) From the ancient Greeks to modern society, and from cannibalism and the taking of the Eucharist to formal dinners and picnics, she illustrates the diet etiquette completely。 She uses dissimilar table manners in different regions to show the growth of the world civilization。 In the book Culture on Dinner Table, Yi Zhongtian points that the core concept of Chinese culture is collectivism while the English-speaking countries’ core concept is inpidualism。 Foreigners order food by themselves instead of taking others’ advice。 On the contrary, Chinese insist that the minority is subordinate to the majority。 In the book Differences and Concretion of Etiquette Culture between East and West, Mr。 Li Xiaojun researches the concretion of ritual civilization between East and West on the basis of the table manners to accomplish the harmonious society。 Yu Lin and Zhou You analyzes the cultural differences between East and West from the following aspects: seat arrangement, dinner atmosphere and language。 It aims at admonishing people to have an impersonal and lenient attitude towards others’ civilizations。
3。 The Origins of Table Manners and the Fusion of them between China and English-speaking Countries
3。1 The origin of the Chinese table manners
Early in Zhou Dynasty, table manners have shaped a complete system, which is a momentous witness of ancient civilizations。 This historical civilization in the Han nationality traditional ritual feast formed a set of corresponding program: First, the master writes an invitation。 Then serve in the hands of guests before supper, so they go to the feast。 The visitor is arriving, and the master must rise to his feet to meet the guests。
