Abstract“Permanent sin” is the main theme in Hawthorne’s works. “Young Goodman Brown” is one of the best stories of Hawthorne in which he unscrambles the theme of “permanent sin” through a forest’s trip and a forest’s party. In the story, Hawthorne reveals the soul journey of Brown who recognizes “evil is the nature of mankind”.

The thesis intends to analyze the “permanent sin” theme in “Young Goodman Brown” from three aspects: characters, images and psychological descriptions. There are two protagonists “Brown” and “Faith”. The meanings of Brown and Faith’s name and their inconsistent behaviors can vividly present the “permanent in”. Besides two protagonists, some other characters can’t be ignored. They are the fellow traveler, the minister of the church and Gookin. Through the depiction of these three people’s deep psychological descriptions, we can see a thought picture of original sin to readers that both saint or villain all have privacy evil. In addition, there are also some important images such as pink ribbons and snake-like staff. These two images vividly imply that everyone is evil.
So, after analyzing the “permanent sin” theme from characters, images and psychological descriptions, we can see that Hawthorne criticizes the Puritan doctrines and reveals the reality of the Puritan society. Therefore, exploring the hidden evil of people and “original sin” became a recurring theme in Hawthorn’s novels.

摘要“原罪”是霍桑作品的永恒主题。《好小伙子布朗》是霍桑最著名的短篇小说之一。在这部小说中，霍桑通过布朗的“黑深林之旅”及“魔鬼晚会”等一系列经历，对“原罪”主题进行了非常深刻的解读，同时也揭示了主人公在意识到人性的恶念之后，对自己信仰从坚信到怀疑的心路历程。26169
本论文主要从三个方面对“原罪”主题进行分析，包括主人公、意象以及心理描写，从而揭示出作品的深远意义。在这篇小说中，主要有布朗和费丝两个主人公，布朗和费丝的名字意义及其与之相反的行为形象生动地表达了“原罪”这一主题。除主人公之外，文中其他的你个人物也不容忽视，他们是布朗的父亲、教长和古今老师，通过对布朗的父亲、教长和古今老师三个人物的心理描写， 霍桑向我们展示了“人性本恶”这一思想。此外，本文中的一些重要一项也反映了霍桑“原罪”这一主题，包括粉红色丝带和蛇形手杖两个意象，从丝带的颜色、意义和手杖的形状和意义来分析霍桑的“原罪”主题。
