Many Hollywood films made much effort in the selection of themes, and depicted exotic images according to their own preferences, especially the Chinese image。 The cultural output represented by Hollywood has aroused interest of many countries, including China。 For such "invisible propaganda", boycott is not enough。 We must take actions: one is to let the audience polish eyes and critically restore the true image of the Chinese; the second is to increase the input of the cultural industry, to go out to participate in the competition of cultural products as far as possible。 At the same time, it’s also important to constantly enhance the people's confidence in Chinese culture and core values。

Film is a special cultural carrier, and culture is an important part of soft power。 Soft power has a significant impact on the shaping of a country's image and will further affect its economy。 The importation of American cinema brought China with external nutrition and inspired cultural innovation of China。 However, it also reflects the United States’ hegemony in the field of culture, which weakened the impact of the traditional culture on our people。

This article analyzes the process of American films making a foreign image by discussing three major factors that influence the image of Chinese politics, economy and culture。 In the face of the prevalence of American films in the world, we can consider drawing on its operational mechanism。 But its core must be the spirit of China。

Then, how to improve soft power by films? There are two things worth mentioning。 First, advanced skills in films make an industry。 It can be seen that the progress of every film technology is accompanied by a substantial increase in the audience。 Second, we should mention the exploration of unique Chinese virtue, civilization in traditional Chinese culture。 We have a huge advantage in terms of the available film themes。

2。 Literature Review

So far, many scholars at home and abroad have elaborated from different angles on the change of Chinese images in American films。

In his "Chinese Images Under the Context of Globalism", Wong Junyi describes clearly the different views of the Chinese and American audiences on the same Chinese image。 This confirms the humiliation of the Chinese image in the early American film。 It also tells us that even in shaping the relatively positive image of the Chinese, the American filmmakers are also showing their superiority when treating the Chinese。 It is worth mentioning that the author mentioned the efforts of Hollywood Chinese workers in shaping their own image, including the film Mr。 Butterfly and Happy and Joy Club。 This provides us with a unique perspective to explain why the image of Chinese underwent a variety of changes in the past three decades。 

Yuan Mengyao wrote "On the Shape of Alien Images"。 The uniqueness of this paper is that it realizes the complexity of the Chinese image itself。 As a country with more than one billion people and thousands of years of history, the Chinese image is difficult to be represented。 So, it is not surprising that a variety of Chinese images appear in the same period of time in Western movies, 。 However, it is difficult to analyze the Chinese images by only three films of Hollywood。

In his “Image of Chinese People in Hollywood Films From Past to Present”, Yang Yuhua described in detail the various Chinese images in American films since 1890, and tried to explain the reasons behind them from the political and economic perspectives。 But his list is lacking in focus, thus cannot be a good reflection of the characteristics of the Chinese image of each period。 In addition, when explaining the reasons behind this phenomenon, he did not take culture, the significant factor into consideration, so it was not comprehensive。
