So what makes the tragedy of this black girl who is very young? In the 20th century, the white who dominated the whole society put white culture as the social norm and compelled the black to receive it。 The hero Pecola abandoned their traditional black culture, internalized the white culture and tried to cater to the white standard of beauty。 Furthermore, she loses her subjectivity。

3。2 Loss of subjectivity as husband and father

Cholly is different from Pecola and Pauline who are keen on the white value and standard with awe and affection。 He is full of curiosity and eagerness to seek for his black cultural identity, which made him alien to the white people。

Cholly had many experiences that made him different。 He was abandoned by his parents after his birth and raised by Auntie Jimmy。 In a sense, he was an orphan which made his value orientation unsure。 When he was young, he was humiliated by two white men who found him doing sex with a girl and forced him to continue while they watched for fun。 Never did he consider his hatred of the hunters who were big, white and armed men。 He cultivated all his emotions to Darlene。
