Title An Analysis of Death and Balance in Mrs. Dalloway
Abstract
Virginia Woolf experiences the pain of losing her closest relatives in her early youth. The unendurable desperation which cannot get consolation from others deteriorates her mental disease. Therefore, death becomes an eternal theme in her works. Whether it is in her masterpiece of stream of consciousness writing - Mrs. Dalloway or in her own life experiences, the shadow of Thanatos is conspicuous in every line. However this brings into correspondence with Freud’s Psychoanalysis-----Thanatos. This thesis attempts to analyze the metaphor of death and the death instinct by integrating the life experience of Virginia Woolf and Freud’s Psychoanalysis in order to share a different view of balance in the novel. The balance in the universe can offer a meaning to death and a hope to live on.

1.1 The Brief Introduction of Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway and Freudian Psychology
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English female writer, regarded as one of the excellent modernist and feminist literary figures of the 20th century. Her father - Leslie Stephen(1832-1904)was a famous biographer and literary critic. He shared his rich collection of books with Virginia, giving her the chance to indulge herself into the surrounding that all those notabilities gathered together in her home talking or debating. Although all her brothers went to college, she had a teacher paid by Leslie to teach her Greek and Latin at home. After Leslie noticed her talent for literature, he even encouraged her to be engaged in writing. All those experience finally contributed to Virginia’s literary background and the great achievement in her life. During the interwar period (the period between the end of the WWI and the beginning of WWII), Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a central figure in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals. Suffering from serious mental disease, she had several breakdowns in life and always confronted severe headaches, but she achieved many masterpieces which will always touch a chord for readers. The disorder of her mind from time to time eventually led her to the edge of suicide. On April 28th, 1941, Virginia Woolf filled her pockets with stones and ended her life by drowning herself in the River Ouse, leaving suicide notes for her husband Leonard Woolf and her sister.
