Title An Analysis of Mother-daughter Relationship in Toni Morrison’s Beloved
Abstract Toni Morrison is one of the most famous African-American writers in contemporary American literature. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. Beloved is one of Toni Morrison’s most famous novels. It narrates a story of a slave mother---Sethe---murdering her own daughter---Beloved. This paper aims to analyze the reasons behind the twisted mother-daughter relationship between Sethe and Beloved. The whole contents will be pided into three parts: Firstly, the paper would compare Sethe’s with Baby Suggs’s different choices under slavery, then analyze the reason why Sethe has lost her self-identity---she is immersed with the past and her dead daughter without knowing that she should treasure herself. Secondly, the paper will demonstrate the representations of the mother-daughter relationship between Sethe and Beloved---Sethe is forced to give Beloved up; Beloved wants to possess Sethe’s love when she returns. Thirdly, the paper will analyze the great impact that the black community has on the black inpiduals.

1 Introduction
Toni Morrison is one of the most famous writers in contemporary American literature. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. Among her many masterpieces, the novel Beloved was the most shocking and moving one. It narrates an appalling story: Sethe, a slave mother, escaped from a plantation which was called the Sweet Home in Kentucky. However, the slaveholder pursued her and wanted to take her and her children back to work. Sethe could no longer bear the misery that her children might relive her terrible life, so she decided to end all her children's life. But eventually, she just managed to cut her two-year-old daughter's throat and got into jail. And 18 years later, the dead daughter Beloved who was killed by her own mother came back to life seeking for her lost maternity love. Mother-daughter relationship is a common theme in Morrison's works. And Sethe was a slave mother, her relationship with Beloved was influenced both by slavery and sex discrimination. As a result, when Sethe realized that her children would go back to the hell and suffer her painful life, she would rather send them to heaven by herself. She seemed to be a brutal and crazy person but indeed, she did it out of the deepest love.
