4.4 Semantic level
As has often been said, the best interpretation is one that does not sound like an interpreting. Although naturalness is a matter of style, it is also a fundamental requirement for the readability of the interpretation.
(1) 温总理：“五年前，我曾面对大家立过誓言：‘苟利国家生死以，岂因祸福避趋之。’今天我还想加上一句话，就是‘天变不足畏，祖宗不足法，人言不足恤。’”
Interpreter: five years ago, in front of a similar audience, I made a promise: one should uphold his country’s interests with his life. He should not do things just to pursue his personal gains and he should not evade his responsibilities for fear of personal loss. Today, I would like to add a few more lines: one should not fear the changes under heaven. One should not blindly follow past conventions and one should not be deterred by complaints of others.
Chinese ancient poetry a brilliant gem, is strongly attracting both domestic and foreign persons with its unique charm, in respect of rhyme, rhythm, form and mood and so on. Based on the comprehensive understanding of the poetry, the interpreter has got the essence of interpretation and expressed the precise meaning of the poem in an accurate and fluent manner.
Nida mentioned in the definition of translation that meaning must be given priority, for it is the content of the message which is of prime importance. It is especially true in interpreting of the press conference, as there are many statements about the nation’s policies, guideline sand other important decisions. To correctly represent the meaning of the speech is the fundamental criterion for this type of interpretation. With serious political matters, a minor mistake may cause a big disaster. Therefore, translation of political texts demands a higher degree of accuracy due to its political sensitivity as compared with translation of other genres.
(2) 温总理：行百里者半九十。
Interpreter: half of the people who have embarked on a one hundred mile journey may fall by the way side.
“fall by the way side” just means leaving something unfinished, using idioms to interpret the Chinese archaism really sounds ingenious.
