    Language is very significant for everybody, it allows human beings to express their thoughts and requirements and inherit their knowledge and experiences. It promotes all-round social progress. Undoubtedly, the government has realized the importance of training communicative competence in secondary school. Five syllabuses have been issued since 1986. The syllabus in 1992 said that “the educational goal of junior middle is to let students gain the ability to master basic English knowledge and the ability to use English through communication”. The English textbook which were compiled according to the new syllabus in 1996 said “the educational goal of senior middle school is to consolidate and increase students’ basic knowledge based on junior school and to develop their skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and to cultivate their communicative competence both in speaking and in writing”. So, It is the main objective that training communicative competence in the progress of middle school English teaching.
    The writer thinks the middle school students who are the beginners of English, English teaching during this era not only should highlight booklore but also should stress culture background. Helping students develop an interest in English communication, leading them actively explore new field of knowledge. Teaching students English communicative competence in middle school, the age characteristic must be considered. Middle school students’ personality is affected by their growth environment. So, we can say for sure that every student is unique. English teaching in middle school must be targeted education.
    Aims of the study are as follow:
    (1)    To survey the current condition of the middle school students’ communicative competence.
    (2)    To find the proper ways of helping students cultivate an interest in English in order to arouse students’ potential and build confidence in English communicative competence.
    (3)    To help the students understand more background knowledge and establish new mode of thinking in foreign culture.
