The Application of Context in English Vocabulary Teaching in Junior High School Abstract In a long time, in China’s English teaching, words are mainly taught through the word list. Teachers let students read each word in the word list after the teacher or the tape, and then explain these words’ meaning according to Chinese translation, which make students just remember the spelling and the meaning mechanically and lack of a clear understanding of the usage of words.47363
There are three research questions in this thesis. First, why does context help teach English vocabulary? Second, what’s the present situation of vocabulary learning and teaching in junior high school? Third, how to teach vocabulary by using context? And the thesis answers these questions from theory and practice. The thesis surveys students’ attitude and methods towards vocabulary learning and the problems of vocabulary teaching by questionnaire, interviews and class observation. And the writer find out that context helps students learn vocabulary better. In the end of this thesis, the writer provides some suggestions of applying context to English vocabulary teaching for the junior high school English teacher and hopes that can help students learn vocabulary better.

摘要在很长一段时间里,中国的英语词汇教学主要是依据词汇表。老师让学生朗读词汇表中的单词,然后根据中文意思解释单词。这种方式使得学生只是机械地记住了单词的拼写和意思,但是却不能真正理解单词的用法。
本文主要研究的是3个问题。第一,为什么语境有助于词汇教学?第二,目前,中学的词汇学习与词汇教学的现状是怎样的?第三,如何将语境运用于词汇教学?本文将从理论和实践两个方面来解答这3个问题。作者通过问卷调查、采访和课堂观察,了解学生对于词汇学习的态度方法以及教师在词汇教学上出现的问题,并且发现语境有助于学生学习单词。本文最后作者希望给中学英语教师提供一些关于语境在英语词汇教学上的建议,以此帮助学生更好地学习英语词汇。
