    1. Introduction

    1.1 Background of the Study

    Reading plays an important role in English learning. Reading ability can directly influence the learning outcomes (Yang, 2007). Various research attached attention to the study on improving learners’ reading ability and achievement. According to considerable research, motivation and leaning strategies have a deep effect on reading. The research has been done on English learners’ reading strategies and reading motivation, including the relationship between reading strategies and reading achievement, the relevance between reading motivation and reading achievement, the factors influencing the reading strategies and reading motivation, and the training or development of reading strategies and reading motivation.  However, little previous research focuses on the relationship between reading motivation and reading strategies.

    1.2 Significance of the Study 

    Research on reading motivation and strategies shows great potential. It is important to understand why and how the learners read. Reading strategies indicate the deep influence on the learners’ reading achievement. The use of appropriate strategies helps learners to improve their reading proficiency. Motivation is one key factor to achievement in learning language (Gardner, 1985). Gardner pointed that the motivation of reading would produce, maintain and impel reading activities. Therefore, the study on the correlation between reading motivation and reading strategies can help language instructors to have better teaching activities. Language instructors can give their consideration to develop reading strategies as well as reading motivation during the reading teaching.

    1.3 Purpose of the Study 

    The paper aims to study the ESL learners’ reading strategies, reading motivation and the relationship between them. The author intends to find out the answers to the following questions: 1) what’s the relationship between reading motivation and reading strategies? 2) What kind of teaching implications for the language instructors are from the study?
