Abstract As everyone knows that science and technology is the primary productive force and is important to the development of a country. As a communicative tool, English for science & technology (EST) is evolved on the basis of general English and has formed its own writing style. Conciseness, objectiveness and formality are all functions of nominalization. The paper has attempted to discuss some features of EST and the classification and functions of nominalization in EST and its translation for Chinese version. According to the differences of linguistic features between English and Chinese, nominalization can be translated as nuns, verbs, adjectives and clauses. Through literature review, this paper has explored a proper way to comprehend and translate the nominalization in EST, so as to improve the translation quality of nominalization in EST.

I. Introduction
In terms of phenomenon of nominalization in EST, it can be investigated in different perspectives, and many scholars laid stress on studies of nominalization, including systemic-functional linguists, traditional linguists, transformational-generative linguists and cognitive linguists. Contrasting with other approaches, systemic-functional linguists made a more thorough and comprehensive analysis of nominalization. Halliday held that nominalization can be seen as an important way of creating grammatical metaphor. In Halliday’s opinion, the phenomenon of nominalization was the natural evolution of language and it was helpful for human beings to understand the experiential world (Halliday 258). Through nominalization, the processes and attributes can become more objective and as if they were not touched by human hands. As for traditional grammarians, they preferred to use “noun phrase” instead of “noun group”. In their opinions, they took nominalization as abstract nouns that were come from verbs originally. They used “Head+modifiers” to indicate the nominalization structure. Whether the pre-modifier or the post-modifier, the determiner was determined by the realization of the head. In some situations, there will be no modifier. For transformational-generative grammarians, they concerned more about the deep structure and surface structure of the nominal groups. They found that the deep structures of verb forms and their nominal forms were resemble. One could find the deep structure of a nominalized group through its surface structure. When it comes to cognitive approach, cognitive linguists indicated that nominalization of verb and adjective was the result of conceptualization. They held that nominalization possessed more static features than verbs, adverbs, adjectives and so on.
