The Enlightenment of Humanistic Learning Theory on Middle School English Teaching Ⅰ. Introduction Humanistic learning theory is originated in American in the late 1960s, based on the modern humanistic philosophy and psychology. The theory is attempt to achieve a balance between student’s emotion and cognitive, through exploring learner’s sense and sensibility to establish value. The representatives include C. R. Rogers, A. Maslow and All port and they centered on the self-realization to demonstrate their opinions which emphasizes that the aim of education is to cultivate an integrate person, propose curriculum management that must be humanized and lay stress on the atmosphere of freedom. However, in reality, the middle school English teaching is preferable on the exam-oriented education and teachers obey the rules of traditional pedagogy, ignoring the student’s needs and interest. In the ideal English classroom, teachers are playing a leading role and students are a main body. It is in such a class that student can learn English actively and be engaged in their self-actualization. Humanistic learning theory affects the middle school English teaching in lots of ways. The whole process of learning is personalized, from the beginning of setting the lesson to the assessment of students’ performance. The focus of humanistic learning theory is on students, so combining the classroom teaching with the real situation outside the classroom and teaching based on students’ experience or previous knowledge can meet the requirements of learners. Based on the humanistic learning theory, the main mission of the teacher is neither teaching students English knowledge (which is emphasized by 源`自*优尔?文.论/文`网[www.youerw.com behaviorist.) nor teaching students how to learn English, but create a facilitating learning environment and let students decide how to learn English. The facilitation of the theory is mainly represented in the following aspects: highlighting the role and function of emotion in the teaching activity and forming a new teaching model powered by sensibility; concentrating on students’ self-realization and emphasizing the importance of relationship in the teaching process which is good for the teaching contents, teaching methods and teaching aids; changing the heart of teaching process from the teacher to the students and considering students’ thought, emotion, experience and be havior. In a word, we can learn and benefit a lot from the humanistic learning theory, in this way, the middle school English teaching level will also promoted. Ⅱ. On Humanistic Learning Theory
