Abstract  Language is one of symbols, different authors wrote works also have different language styles, arousing different understandings among the readers. Pearl S.Buck’s novel The Good Earth once became the best-selling novel at home and abroad, a great deal of researches has been done on The Good Earth. Some on the subject of feminism, some about intercultural communication, humanity and so on. However, the research of the language style in this novel is seldom been found. Accordingly, this paper is to analyze the language style of The Good Earth from the angle of the following three aspects, the feature of popular and easy words, the feature of using short sentences as well as the feature of expressions in Chinese-language style. Combined with examples in this novel, through the analysis of the language style, revealing the real status, ideas and emotional communication of all roles in a simple and clear way. And also carding the whole context of the development of the plot. So readers more thoroughly understand the real environment of China and Chinese people’s life in the early 20th century , especially westerners. 60060

摘要语言是一种符号,不同作者所写的作品也有不同的语言风格，从而引起读者不同的见解。赛珍珠的长篇小说《大地》曾一度成为国内外最畅销的小说，大量针对其作品《大地》的研究随之流传，有以女性主义为主题的，跨文化交流的，以及人性主义为研究方向的。然而，对其语言风格的研究却颇为少见。因此本文从以下三个方面来对此小说的语言风格进行一定的分析，其中包括通俗词汇的使用特色，短句法的使用特色以及中式化表达风格的使用特色。结合小说中的例句，通过对语言风格的分析，简单明了的揭示出小说中各类角色的现实地位以及他们的思想观念，情感交流。同时也梳理出故事情节发展的整体脉络。从而使得读者们，尤其是对于西方人来说，更为彻底地了解20世纪初期下中国的社会大环境以及中国人民的生活与文化。

1. Introduction 

 Pearl S Buck was born on June 26, 1892, in West Virginia, and she was the first American female writer who won both the Pulitzer(1932) and Nobel award(1938). Pearl S Buck is the only child of Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker, and she lived in America for only a few months. When she was about three months old, her parents took her on a mission to China together with them. Pearl S Buck lived in China until she was seventeen years old. Buck felt that she belonged to both cultures, American and Chinese. She learned both English and Chinese. In the early 1900s, Buck went to America to attend college. She went to Randolph-Macon Woman’s College（1910-1914）to study the psychology in Virginia. After she finished college. She then became a Presbyterian missionary like her father and returned to China. On May 13, 1917, Pearl married John Lossing Buck, an American agricultural specialist employed by the Presbyterian Mission Board to teach Chinese people the American farming methods. While living with her husband in Suzhou, which is in the northern part of Anhui province in China for several years, Pearl got to know Chinese peasants’ family there and carefully observed their lives. It is this region she described later in her novel The Good Earth.
