1 Introduction
1.1 Hawthorne and The Birth-Mark
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 – 1864) is an extremely distinguished novelist and short story writer of American Romanticism in the19th century. With volumes of thought-provoking classic novels and short stories,he is universally regarded as a representative of moral and allegorical writing in American literature. And his works have been attracting attentions from both common readers and the circle of literary critics to this day.
Hawthorne was born in a puritan family and was haunted all his life by the sense of sin and evil of his ancestors’ misdeeds. “Puritanism had exerted overwhelming influence on his inward consciousness, and thus the effects of hidden sin and guilt and the conflict between the head and the heart pervaded most of his works” (Wang Guiju, 2010: 1), such as the romances like The Scarlet Letter and The house of the Seven Gables. “In Hawthorne’s eyes, all forms of social problems, interpersonal conflicts and all crimes have the root in the universal evil in human nature” (Wang Guiju, 2010: 1). “Hawthorne’s short stories, or tales, were widely acclaimed for their deft recreation of the past, insightful characterizations, and allegorical treatment of such themes as sin, guilt, and alienation” (Matthiessen, 1946: 132). By continuing to evoke the truth of human nature in his works, Hawthorne maintained the permanent status as one of the most significant writers in American literature.
