Abstract Theodore Dreiser is a 20th century American novelist. When Sister Carrie was first published, it was criticized by readers and critics. But with the development of feminist theory, readers and critics began to interpret this book from a new perspective. This thesis focuses on Carrie’s awareness of feminism while a lot of articles are written from the point of view of the naturalism, the symbolic art and the characterization of this work. They consider Carrie as a tragic woman but while I hold a different opinion. This thesis aims to show positive attitudes towards Carrie’s awareness of feminism. As a result, I think she is a successful woman.
This thesis is comprised of four parts. The first chapter is going to introduce the significance of this research and literature review. The second chapter analyzes the reasons that Carrie became the feminist. The third chapter aims to express her gradual independence and compare Carrie’s different positions in Chicago and in New York to show the effects of her consciousness of feminism. In the last chapter, I make a conclusion that Carrie is an independent new woman and she is successful owing to her struggle. 71708

摘 要西奥多•德莱赛是二十世纪杰出的美国现实zhuyi小说家,他的著名小说《嘉莉妹妹》在刚开始问世时并没有得到大家的认可。但是随着新女性zhuyi思想的发展,读者和研究者们才开始以另一种全新的视角来解读这本书中的女主人公嘉莉妹妹。有很多研究都是从这本书的自然zhuyi,象征艺术,人物塑造等这些角度来写的。也有很多笔者分析并认为嘉莉妹妹是个具有悲剧色彩的女人。然而我这篇论文是以女性zhuyi角度来写的。论文旨在肯定嘉莉所表现出来的女性意识,因此我也并不认为嘉莉是可悲的,相反是成功的。
本论文一共分成四个部分:第一个部分是介绍了本论文主题的研究意义,关于作者和这本书的简单介绍和文献综述部分。第二部分是简单分析了嘉莉妹妹在当时的社会大环境背景下,有新女性zhuyi思想的原因。第三个部分是本文的中心所在,嘉莉的逐渐独立是女性意识觉醒的体现及带来的影响。前一部分概述了嘉莉女性意识的发展,后一部分对比了嘉莉妹妹所在芝加哥和纽约不同城市的生活状态正是表现出女性意识对嘉莉妹妹的影响。最后一部分是概括总结,简单总结全文,并指出嘉莉妹妹的女性意识的发展给予了嘉莉很大的影响,改变了她的人生。最终成为独立成功的新女性。
