1。1 Background of The Study
With the the extensive spreading of English as well as the the development of cultural plurality , English literature has come to domestic people’s daily life and aroused increasing attention by its exotic uniqueness。 In all works of English literature ,Wuthering Heights is one of the most typical one,and it is also warmly welcomed by Chinese。it was an acknowledge classic of English literature:’almost no one has been audacious enough to deny its power an its unique place in the development of English fiction”(Watson,87)Recent years, a great amount of research papers of wuthering Heights have given us a detailed, downright, comprehensive and deep comprehension of this work。 Wuthering Heights is in a ways the most disturbingly modern work of Victorian fiction, open_ended in theme if not in plot , full of imaginative tension ,posing queatins rather than offering answers。(Richard,Bradford,276)
Wuthering Heights is the only novel written by Emily Bronte, who is a well-know female novelists of the 19th century in English Literature。 Gaojihai once siad :Emily was a private person,rejecting contact the world。(Gaojihai,114) Her book truly reflect her inner mind。 In Whthering Heights,she described complex affections between Catherine and Heathcliff, Catherine and Linton。 However, all the characters’ affections in the book were ended in tragedy, in a way ,showing us a distorted society, darkness inherent in human nature and hopeless fate。In the novel, the most interesting and charming character was Heathcliff who suffered from ups and downs and finally lose himself 。I think that his malignant mood had its source in some cruel cross of fate。 Heathcliff is just one of the small sample in such a big distorted society in that time 。Because of the unfairness and hopelessness , he turns into ferocious that goes against ordinary people’s concept of affection and moral principles。 He had a burning desire to take revenge。 The sincere and decent human nature was eventually damaged and distorted , and the originally magnificent affection came to the end ultimately。 论文网
1。2 Significance of the Study
The change of Heathcliff’s character from sitting down under to impersonal, has aroused the literates’ highly attention。 The reasons of the change are multiple。 Many literates are searching for this (E。L。Gilbert 123) From the analysis to the reasons, we can learn a lot。First, it could help readers to understand the novel easily。 Second, from the analysis to the reasons, we can get farther understanding to love and hatred (Zhang Tongle 135) Third, it builds a typical novel character model which are worthy to study。 Analyzing the reasons could help writing in how to build up a complex and vivid character 。 At the same time ,we can also acquire more knowledge about the 19th century and society and develop insights。 This paper, therefore, attempts to make a survey into the change of Heathcliff’s character, and analyze the reasons resulting in the change。Especially, focus on the influence of class distinction 。
