Abstract The well-known African-American woman writer Toni Morrison was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her novel Beloved, which is regarded as a milestone in American literature。 Infanticide is the most tragic, the most horrific, and the most thought-provoking theme in the novel。 Morrison, as a black woman writer, inherits and reconstructs the infanticide matrix in the novel with her rich imagination and poetical expression, taking full advantage of the post-modernism and the Latin American magic realism。 Through the analysis of infanticide matrix, this paper aims to make an interpretation to Toni Morrison’s artistic approach and her inheritance and reconstruction of infanticide matrix, exploring the evil of slavery and the deep, strong mother love in Beloved。75093

Toni Morrison (born Chloe Ardelia Wofford; February 18, 1931) is an American Novelist, editor, and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University。 Her novels are well known for their epic themes, vivid dialogue, and vivid characters。 Among her best known novels are The Bluest Eye(1970), Sula(1973), Song of Solomon(1977), and Beloved(1987)。 (Wikipedia)。 She is the first winner of Nobel Prize for Literature as an African American woman writer。 Toni Morrison is generally considered as one of the leading writers in the field of contemporary American literature。 Most of her works are focusing on black women’s suffering and awakening, racial and sexual discrimination, and the harmony between man and nature。 Beloved was honored with the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award in 1988 for Beloved。 Her language is eccentric, grumpy and violent。 The novel has carried an offensive smell of blood, it is unconstrained and unshackled。 Toni Morrison exerts her utmost efforts to tell the tragic histories and salvation in the recent records。 She uses her pen to grasp the memories of black people’s humiliation with her tough, powerful and subtle control force, making everyone shocked when hearing the story。 Beloved is published in 1987。 The novel set in 1873 just after the American Civil War(1861-1865)。 It is based on the story of the African-American slave, Margaret Garner, who escaped slavery in 1856 in Kentucky by fleeing to Ohio, a free state。 A posse arrived to retrieve her and her children under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which gave slave owners the right to pursue slaves across states。 Beloved’s main character, Sethe, killed her own little girl and tried to kill the other three children when the slave owners came after her。 Beloved, her daughter, returned to haunt the house later。 “124 WAS SPITEFUL。 Full of a baby’s venom” (Morrison 1)。 Eighteen years later, when the slavery was abolished, Beloved revived after death, lived with Sethe, Sethe’s daughter Denver, and Paul。D (Sethe’s lover)。 Beloved punished her mother’s infanticide with her appearance day and night, destroyed her mother’s life。 The whole book is full of bitter poetry and nervous suspense。论文网
