Abstract During translation, the linguistic and cultural differences between the source language and target language cause the lack of semantic meaning and aesthetic value of the source text easily。 So translation compensation must be used to make up such losses。 Since the 1980s, more and more translators have studied on translation compensation。 Their research achievements had laid a firm foundation for further researches。76035

Based on translation compensation theory, this thesis tries to analyze compensation strategies applied in Sandalwood Death from the perspective of lexicon, grammar and discourse。 This paper makes a brief explanation on translation compensation and looks back into its history。 The author focuses on analyzing compensation strategies by adopting typical examples in Sandalwood Death, hoping to give a realistic guiding significance to further understanding of translation compensation。

摘要在翻译过程中，由于原语与译语在语言和文化方面的差异，很容易造成原文中语义和审美价值方面的缺失。为了补偿这些缺失，翻译补偿策略则变得非常重要。19世纪80年代开始越来越多的翻译人员开始研究翻译补偿策略，他们的研究成果给以后的研究奠定了坚实的基础。

本文以翻译补偿理论为理论基础，以檀香刑英译本为例，着重从词汇、语法及语篇角度对小说中翻译补偿策略的应用进行探究；对其作了简要说明并对其发展历史进行了简要回顾，通过对檀香刑英译本中的典型译例进行分析，希望能为进一步了解翻译补偿策略提供现实指导意义。

1。 Introduction

Translation compensation is a new concept in translation circles in recent decades。 There is a great development in the research of translation compensation rules and strategies。 Liu Miqing (1999) formulates the four rules, “Translation compensation should help change the meaning completely, help optimize the language construction moderately; help improve the target language’s readability properly, help the sympathy and aesthetic engagement of receivers。”(Liu 194) Xia Tingde is the first to make a comprehensive and systematic research about translation compensation at home。 His book A Research on Translation Compensation is the first monograph on translation compensation in China。 It says, “Translation compensation is the necessary means to cut translation loss and fully reappear the meaning of source text。”(Xia 190) So a translator can adopt a flexible means to make compensation for different losses。 

The lengthy masterpiece Sandalwood Death which Mo Yan has spent five years meticulously creating has been translated into more than five kinds of languages。 It is translated into English by the well-known American translator Howard Goldblatt。 He has translated other Mo Yan’s works like Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, Frog and so on。 The English version adopts many different strategies to compensate for linguistic and cultural differences and losses。 It has spread quickly throughout all the English-speaking countries since it was published。 Howard Goldblatt’s translation is rigorous and dainty。 It makes Chinese literature have the features of contemporary British and American literature。 The author found that the success of English version and the extensive use of various translation compensation strategies are inseparable。 Therefore, a study of these strategies provides an important guidance to literary translation。 论文网
