1。1 Background Information
Jerome David Salinger is an American writer who won acclaim early in life。 He led a very private life for more than a half-century。 He published his final original work in 1965 and gave his last interview in 1980。 Salinger was raised in Manhattan and began writing short stories while in secondary school。 Several of those short stories were published in Story magazine in the early 1940s before he began serving in World War II。 In 1951, his novel The Catcher in the Rye was an immediate popular success。 The success of The Catcher in the Rye led to public attention and scrutiny。 Salinger became reclusive, publishing new work less frequently。 He followed The Catcher in the Rye with a short story collection, Nine Stories; a volume containing a novella and a short story, Franny and Zooey; and a volume containing two novellas, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction。论文网
As for Salinger’s masterpiece, The Catcher in the Rye is generally acknowledged as one of the most influential book to come after the post-war。 After its publication, The Catcher in the Rye quickly became a best seller passed from hand to hand and broadly read by young people。 By the end of the 1950s there was hardly a young student who had not read the book。 Young generation felt that the book represented their true feelings about their life and the world。 They even imitated Holden, the protagonist of the book, such as wearing a red hunting hat and speaking in the way as same as that of Holden。 The Catcher in the Rye is a novel about a three-day experience of a 16-year-old boy called Holden Caulfield。 Holden shares encounters he has had with the students and faculty of Pencey, whom he criticizes as being superficial, or as he would say, “phony。” After being expelled from the school, Holden takes a train to New York, where he spends a total of two days and characterized largely by drunkenness and loneliness。 At the end of the second day, Holden sneaks into his parents’ apartment to visit his younger sister Phoebe, who is nearly the only person with whom he seems to be able to communicate。 After leaving his parents’ apartment, Holden then drops by to see his old teacher, Mr。 Antolini, and is offered a place to sleep。 His comfort is upset when he wakes up in the night to find Mr。 Antolini patting his head in a way that seems “perverty”。 Holden intends to move out west but decides not to go at last。 At the close of the book, Holden decides not to mention much about the present day, finding it inconsequential, but mentions that he’ll be attending another school in September, and that he has found himself missing Stradlater, Ackley, and the others。文献综述
