Abstract James Joyce is a famous Irish poet and writer and one of the greatest novelists in the 20th century。 His works have  delicate  description, peculiar words and are full of creativity 。 They have a great influence on the creation of the modern literature and promote the development of the western literature of the 20th century。 Dubliners is a collection of short stories written by him and it creates a new era of short stories。 It contains fifteen stories and these stories which set in Dublin, portray the paralytic and lifeless mental state that pervades the whole society of Ireland in the late nineteenth early twentieth century。 This paper analyzes the manifestations of Dubliners’ spiritual paralysis from four aspects of religion, politics, emotion and psyche, shows its impact on people from the aspect of behavior and indicates the reasons of the spiritual paralysis from the internal and external aspects。 Thus, it reveals the social reality and vicissitude of life that exist not only in Dublin, but also in the whole western world。 It also makes people have a deep understanding of the writing techniques and content of the modern   literature。79370
