On the Influence of the Differences Between Chinese and English Thinking Modes on Middle School English Writing
I。 Introduction
The way of thinking is people’s thinking habits or thinking process, which affects language and is reflected in the language。 Different ethnic groups have common thoughts, but thinking modes, the characteristics of thinking are quite different。 Different languages and cultures and ways of thinking reflect different ethnic characteristics, and embody the social, cultural and psychological tendency of different nationalities。 Mother tongue always has impacts on those who learn a new language。 Traditional thinking mode will lead to a new problem to language teaching that how middle school students can write authentic English articles。 Some studies indicate that English compositions written by Chinese and English students are obviously different in the discourse organization。 The level of Chinese students’ English writing in middle school has been improved, however, the English compositions written by them read not as simon-pure and fluent as native English and especially make British and American people feel uncomfortable , although there is little serious grammatical error。 Therefore, how to improve the writing ability of students in the process of English teaching has become a problem which puzzles teachers in China。 One of the most important reasons why students can not write an authentic English composition is the influence of their mother tongue, especially the negative transfer of thinking mode in language expression。 Chinese students prefer to construct the discourse and organize sentences with Chinese thinking mode when writing English compositions。 So it is important to improve the ability and awareness of cross-cultural communication and the middle school students should know about these differences between Chinese and English and be able to overcome the interference of Chinese thinking modes to achieve successful completion of the transformation between English and Chinese and write English compositions which accord with English thinking modes。
II。 Chinese and English Thinking Modes
2。1 Language and Thinking Modes
The relationship between language and thinking mode has been controversial for several decades, and the most influential theory is Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis。 It can be pided into “Linguistic Relativity” and “Linguistic Determination”。 Linguistic Relativity claims that different languages may influence the way of thinking, while the Linguistic Determination claims that language determines the way of thinking。 There is a close connection between language and culture which has been acknowledged by Sapir。 It has been widely supported that people should comprehend or appreciate the one who has a good knowledge of the other one, after which there are other different opinions against this theory having been put forward by many scholars。 Some of them consider that thinking modes determine the use of language, that is to say, language is limited by human beings’ cognition, while others think that language and culture have little or even no direct connection。
However, there is ineluctable influence between language and thinking modes。Not only influenced by different thinking modes and cultures, language also embodies the reality of thinking and culture, which is reflected on the form rather than the essence of thinking。 So when people learn or use a foreign language, they should also learn and understand this language’s relevant culture and enhance their awareness of cross-culture communication。论文网
