随着社会的不断进步，人民温饱问题解决后，更加追求的是精神上的享受。家长们对自己的后代不再是单纯的要求学习理论知识，还要让自己的孩子多才多艺，学校在体音美的课堂比重也加大了，不断地提高孩子们的全面素养。其中音乐教育作为一门独立的学科应运而生。
音乐教育专业是培养和造就适应社会主义市场经济建设和教育改革发展需要的具有较好音乐素养和教学能力专门人才的学科。通过本专业的学习，能适应教师专业化的发展要求，系统掌握音乐教育的基础理论与方法，具有运用所学知识分析、解决实际问题以及进行教学研究的能力，又能够从事中小学音乐教育新课程改革以后的教育教学活动。从这段话可以看出音乐教育专业培养出来的学子有的能运用所学专业知识，钻研更深层次的理论；也有的可以从事中小学音乐教育教学活动。
一、音乐教育专业培养目标
音乐教育专业的培养目标为：为中小学及其他学校培养合格的音乐师资。具体要求是：通过教学及音乐实践活动，培养学生热爱音乐教育事业的精神，提高审美修养，丰富情感体验，陶冶高尚情操，具备适应中小学和其他学校音乐教学需要的理论、知识、能力和素养，奠定终身热爱音乐、享受音乐、学习音乐、传授音乐的良好基础。
