The Evolution of the mycorrhizal dependence of Plantago virginica during invasion
Abstract:Invasive plants inevitably suffer from new selection pressure and change the symbiosis relations in novel environments. While most previous work has examined the characteristics of invasive plants on symbiosis with the most important mutualists-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi(AMF), the adaptive evolution of invasive plants in dependence of AMF has been little considered. By conducting a common garden experiment, we compared dependence on mycorrhizal symbiosis of Plantago virginica between its native and invasive populations. Our results showed that invasive populations depended less on mycorrhizal symbiosis, indicated by less responses to AMF. It can be concluded by the less variation between its native and invasive populations in leaf area、leaf length、leaf width、leaf dry mass、leaf mass per area and above-ground biomass under treatment and less AMF inoculation for invasive populations. This finding supports the existing hypothesis “The degraded mutualism hypothesis” and is of significant importance to guide the management and prevention of the invasion of exotic species.
