1。3 Introduction to the Novel
Gone with the Wind is a novel under the background of the Civil War, but Margaret has not put much emphasis on the battle field。 As a novel describing the Civil War in the perspective of a southern woman, Margaret stressed the experiences and feelings for the women who suffer the pain of the war at home——from respecting and supporting for the war at first to getting through the pain of losing their family members, to surrendering to the fate and to rebuilding their homes。 The South was defeated; someone lost everything, became fragile and could not be strong enough to face the fragments of life。 On the contrary, others faced the cruel reality and stood and struggle again, thus became stronger, in which Scarlett plays a prominent role。
Scarlett was born in Tara, a rich plantation, who attracts most boys in the county。 She loves her neighbor Ashley, while Ashley marries his cousin Melanie, which makes Scarlett jealous and marries Melanie’s brother Charles, her first husband。 Then the Civil War breaks out, and the whole Southern society gets into the war。 Under the pressure of the war and the tough life, Scarlett becomes a mature and strong woman。 During the war, Scarlett’s first husband Charles died and she encountered Rhett Butler again in Atlanta。 Later on, to pay the tax of Tara, she married Frank, her second husband, who had been her sister’s fiancé。 Unluckily, Frank also died for revenge for Scarlett。 Then Rhett, the third and the last husband of Scarlett mentioned in the novel, finally proposed to Scarlett and they get married and led a happy marriage life。 Their daughter Bonnie was born and their life began to change。 Rhett loved Bonnie as his life and Bonnie died from a pony’s back, which makes Rhett lose all strength and confidence of living with Scarlett together and he left Scarlett at last just when Scarlett realized that how much she has loved him。
