Title  The Realistic Metaphor in Black Fairy Tales: Once Upon A Time 

Abstract Black fairy tales, which are becoming more and more popular in the recent decades, have raised much attention and argument among people。 Once Upon A Time, first released by ABC Studios in 2011 and then having achieved great popularity in both domestic and abroad markets, is a typical black fairy tale series。 This thesis focuses on the values reflected in the series, including good and evil, and heroism。 Through analyses, values are found to be reflected in totally different ways in Once Upon A Time compared with those in traditional fairy tales, as they are more cruel but more realistic, thus confirming the value of black fairy tales。

1 Introduction

Black fairy tale is a kind of literature which shows the darkness and cruelty of the real world with the narrative skills of traditional fairy tales。 Black fairy tale is the opposite to traditional fairy tale full of beauty, hope and purity (Wang, 2014)。 Black fairy tale fits adults more。 It is not children’s “pillow book” any more。 Black fairy tale is filled with the accusation to the real world and the query to the so-called beautiful matters。  From+优!尔.YouErw.com 加QQ75201`8766

There are black fairy tale works in both literature and films。 One of the most influential black fairy tale novels is Snow White written by America literary master, Donald Barthelme。 In the novel, the once pure and innocent princess Snow White becomes a common woman in real modern world, who has flesh and blood, lust and evil thoughts, jealousy and feminism。 She makes beautiful dreams about herself in fairy tales which are incompatible with the real world she lives in and dreams she can still become the center of the world like what she is in fairy tales。 In addition to Snow White, there are many adaptations to traditional fairy tales on the internet, in which the Ugly Duckling is roasted in the end, the Little Mermaid is actually a fierce shark, and Sleeping Beauty becomes an evil witch after finding her prince stop to marry another princess on his way to wake her up。 Little Red Riding Hood helps her Mom kills her grandma for her money but the wolf loses its life to save grandma。 Aladdin becomes a prince and kills all his friends because they know his secrets。 One of the most famous black fairy tale style films is Pans Labyrinth, which deconstructs the narrating model of traditional fairy tales。 The film tells in a terrifying style the adventure of a princess from a magical underground kingdom who gets lost in human society and finally returns to her home after overcoming many difficulties coming from the human society she lives in。 The America fantasy drama television series Grimm is also a representative of black fairy tale。 The television series consists of five adventure stories based on Grimm’s Fairy Tales。论文网
