Jane Eyre is a novel written by English writer Charlotte Bronte based on her own experiences。 It was published on 16 October, 1847。 It had been endowed with strong feminist color since it was published。 The female consciousness in Jane Eyre challenged the authority of men in the Victoria era which advocated male supremacy。 In this novel, Charlotte Bronte creates a female image who is pure, good at thinking , dignified, has courage to pursue the equality and fight for her own rights and true love。 Jane Eyre has become the representative of women who has rebellious consciousness in the age of Victoria。 The author expresses the awakening of female consciousness and promotes the gender equality in marriage, love and economic。 It puts forward that women are supposed to strive for independence and dignity by self struggle, which reflects the budding feminism of that era。

Charlotte Bronte’ s Jane Eyre has gradually achieved a great popularity among Chinese readers from its first introduction into China in 1917。 It is always fascinating to readers and academic scholars in China, for it not only possesses a literary and aesthetic charm of its own, but also has rich thematic meanings and implied moral teachings。Therefore, it is so well appreciated by Chinese readers that it is recommended by the Chinese national education department as one of the fundamental classical reading books。 There is no doubt that many college female students have read this work and been familiar to the leading character Jane。 There has been more than 100 years since Jane Eyre was published。However, under the totally different cultural and social background, how well can female college students understand Jane’ s female consciousness?
