With the acceleration of globalization, the cultural communication appears particular importance。 Literature translation, as a bridge, has been a hot field which attracts numerous scholars to exhaust their ability to study on。 Ci-poetry, a typical cultural characteristic in China, which reaches its peak in Song Dynasty, has its own permanent value。  Many scholars, both at home and abroad, have noticed its significance and make efforts to translate some famous works, especially the masterpieces of Li Qingzhao, Xin Qiji and Su Shi。 However, owing to the complexity of poetry itself, the poetry translation is always facing controversies。

As Song-ci originated from the entertainment songs as well as it contains plentiful factors such as history, culture, tradition etc, the translation of ci-poetry is meeting great challenge。 Based on the arduous exploration of forerunners, many outstanding translators spring up, accompanying with abundant translations, such as “Shui Diao Ge Tou”。

As one of masterpieces of Su Shi, an outstanding poet in Song Dynasty, “Shui Diao Ge Tou” is a popular poem among translators and it has several popular English versions, including Lin Yutang’s, Xu Yuanchong’, Yang Xianyi & Dai Naidie's and so on。 Each of the versions contains unique understanding of translators。 In China, also abroad,  different thories are accepted in the practice of ci-poetry translation, the translation of poetry has made great progress while comparing study is now still an immature area。 It is necessary to analyze different versions in order to facilitate the development of translation。

The Gestalt Theory opened a brand-new perspective to analyze translation text。 In 1912, Gestalt Psychology Theory was first proposed by Max Wertheimer and developed by Koffka and Kohler。 Chinese scholars began to pay attention to and applied it after 2002 the year when Jiang Qiuxia published her famous work— Aesthetic Progression in Literary Translation: Image-G Actualization。  The paper will compare the two English versions of “Shui Diao Ge Tou” written by Xu Yuanchong and John。 A。 Turner, and aim to select a better version based on the Gestalt Theory。

1。2 Significance of the Research

China is a big country with splendid culture produced by the long history。 It is precious wealth both of our nation and the world among which ci-poetry plays an important role。 Translators should take the responsibility to deliver the classical Chinese literature to the world。 However, poetry language is quite difficult to be expressed in another language, especially against totally different language systems。 Though, there are many excellent translations, it is still necessary to find a more suitable version considering all the factors。

Furthermore, Su Shi was one of the most outstanding poets in Northern Song Dynasty of China. His poetry has been translated at home and abroad, which was studied by many scholars, and “Shui Diao Ge Tou” was a representative one。 Showing the closest translation is what we expect without question。 论文网

As we know, language is related with thinking, and thus philosophy has always been applied to social science, natural science, literature analysis, translation and so on, especially in West。 And Gestalt Theory, enjoying great reputation in West in 20th century, infiltrated into the field of translation。 It is out of question that gestalt theory will deepen and broaden comparing studies of Chinese Ci-poetry translation。
